Great Hand Carved
Boat races, the major part of the Water Festival, are conducted at the capital, Phnom Penh. Each and every village gets the chance to take part in the boat races and generally they do. The boats are normally bunker canoes with a stem and stern that bends upward. The boats are ornately decorated and engraved to symbolize the village. The stem is painted with a big eye like those that adorned the war vessels of antique times.
A boat normally has 40 rowers. The first two days pairs of boats are raced. A race with all the small boats takes place on the last day of the festival. The rationale behind this race is to please the god of the river so that many fish and plenty of rice crops will be the result. The Water festival, while observing the turnaround of the waters, also shows the starting of the year’s fishing season.
Nearly a million people from all over the country gather on the banks of the Tonle Sap to see the boat races and to observe the Tonle Sap. With the city overflowing at this time, it is no surprise that it looks like a carnival and this feeling is felt by everyone. Live performances are held, food stalls are set up, and children and adults take rides on ferris wheels to observe the excitement; at night, fireworks are lit and people dance in the street. People who live in the countryside all over Cambodia come to the festival. Many travel down the 3 rivers that run through the city. Some come to race with their long, hand-carved boats. Others come to watch the 3 days of boat races and take part in the festivities. This is Cambodia’s own version of Mardi Gras.
Just like at Mardi Gras, the rush at the Water festival is large. To control thousands of festival-goers, police barricades prevent power-driven traffic, allowing only bikes and people on foot through. As it is a festival, schools are closed and a holiday is declared for the workers. The streets of the city are filled with people within ten blocks of the Tonle Sap and the Royal Palace bursting with enthusiasm.
Phnom Penh is alive with activity just before, during and immediately after the water festival, so it is highly advised for tourists and visitors to book accommodation in a Phnom Penh hotel in advance to ensure accommodation. Many previous visitors to the Water Festival have commended staying at a luxury hotel in Phnom Penh has complemented the great experience in Cambodia.
